Create Structure

Set Office Hours

Define a specific work schedule for yourself with clear beginning and end times to your “office hours”. Treat this schedule as real commitments, just as if you were going into an actual workplace. Having set hours prevents work from bleeding into all hours of the day.

Make a Daily To-Do List
A simple to-do list of 3-5 must-complete items helps provide direction and prioritization for each day. Tackle harder projects first when your energy and focus are best. Crossing completed tasks off your list provides a sense of progress.

Use a Calendar to Schedule Tasks

Use a calendar to assign blocks of time for specific tasks and projects. This allows you to create time boundaries around activities to keep you on track. Schedule your to-do list items into calendar appointments whenever possible for additional structure.

Create Dedicated Spaces

Designate separate spaces like a home office for intense focus work and break/creative spaces where you can think more freely or relax when needed. Moving between these spaces helps compartmentalize different modes of working.

Take Regular Breaks

Build short breaks into your schedule throughout the day. Stand up and walk away from your work area at least every 90 minutes. Having set break times prevents you from feeling “always on” and contributes to sustaining energy and focus.

Minimize Distractions

Minimizing distractions is crucial for managing your time effectively when working from home. With so many potential distractions around you, it takes conscious effort to limit tangents that derail your productivity. Here are some tips for How to Manage Your Time Effectively When Working from Home

Silence Phone Notifications

Turn off all non-essential notifications on your computer and smartphone to prevent distracting pops, dings, and buzzes. Only allow notifications from communication channels essential for your work like email and messaging apps.

Close Extra Browser Tabs & Programs
Only keep browser tabs and software programs open that are directly relevant to the current task you’re working on. All those extra open tabs and programs compete for your attention and create temptation to stray.

Use Website Blocking Apps

Use apps like Freedom, SelfControl, or Forest to block access to common distraction sites like social media, news sites, YouTube, games, online shopping sites, etc. Configure these to only allow access during designated break times.

Wear Noise-Cancelling Headphones
Put on noise-cancelling headphones with no music on to hone focus, especially if you have a busy household. The muted environmental sounds signals to others that you are focused on work.

Set Phone Boundaries
Silence your phone, flip it face down, and put it away in a drawer to prevent impulsive checks. Let calls go to voicemail and only check messages during specified break times. Making your devices less accessible curbs habits to constantly glance.

The key is creating separation from distractions, limiting digital and environmental stimuli, and setting physical barriers to curb mindless diversions. With less pulling at your attention, you can channel focus to apply yourself more diligently during work sessions.

Stay Productive

Staying productive while working remotely takes some effort, but is very achievable with the right tactics. Here are my top tips for staying productive when working from home:

  1. Define your most optimal work times and create blocks of “deep work” time in your calendar for your most challenging priorities. Whether you’re a morning person or night owl, protect those productive hours for intense focus work.
  2. During those blocks of deep work time, eliminate all distractions. Silence phone notifications, close email, block websites, and put up physical signs to prevent interruptions from others in your household.
  3. Use the Pomodoro technique to alternate 25-minute intense work sprints with 5-minute breaks. This trains your mind to focus, the regular breaks prevent mental fatigue, and you have visible task completions.
  4. Knock out shorter administrative tasks like filing expense reports, scheduling meetings, responding to emails etc. in batches. Check email just 2-3 times per day at designated times instead of constantly.
  5. When you start feeling mental fatigue setting in have activities on hand to recharge and give your subconscious mind space for inspiration – take a walk, do household chores, exercise, listen to energizing music.
  6. Designate spaces like a separate home office to leave work issues behind at the end of your workday. Compartmentalization is helpful to truly relax and recharge in your personal life.
  7. Celebrate wins – even if no one is around to high five you, building in recognition of accomplishments makes achieving continuous progress enjoyable.

Maintain Boundaries

Maintaining strong boundaries is vital for managing your time effectively when working remotely. With work and life activities blended under the same roof, conscious effort is required to set limits. Here are some best practices

Define Work Hours – Set specific start and end times to contain your “at work” time within designated boundaries. Resist stretching into late nights or early mornings too frequently.

Create Physical Transitions – Bookend your workday by changing clothes, shifting locations, going for walks. This shifts your mindset out of “work mode”.

Communicate Availability to Others – Let co-workers, friends and family know when you are available for meetings and general interaction. Disable notifications outside those windows.

Have a Dedicated Workspace – When possible, conduct work activities exclusively in your designated home office area to associate that space with “on the clock”.

Establish “Off Duty” Rituals – After work hours, prioritize personal activities not related to office work to assert separation. For example, make family time non-negotiable.

Set Expectations with Leadership – If hours creep consistently late, discuss workload management strategies with your manager to right-size responsibilities.

Enable Psychological Detachment – Truly stepping away requires not just closing your laptop but mentally disconnecting from rumination about work projects.

Take Regular Breaks – Use annual leave in consistent increments for multi-day breaks from work instead of saving excessively. Periodic complete unplugging is restorative.

Additional Tips:

  • Dress for Success: While you may not need to wear formal attire, getting dressed for work can help you feel more professional and focused.
  • Manage Energy Levels: Schedule demanding tasks for your peak productivity times. Take advantage of lower energy periods for easier tasks or emails.
  • Self-Care: Prioritize healthy habits like regular sleep, exercise, and healthy meals to boost your energy and focus.
  • Experiment & Adapt: Find what works best for you and be willing to adjust your approach as needed.

Remember, effective time management is a journey, not a destination. Be kind to yourself, experiment, and find the strategies that help you thrive in your work-from-home environment.

  1. Modern Talking был немецким дуэтом, сформированным в 1984 году. Он стал одним из самых ярких представителей евродиско и популярен благодаря своему неповторимому звучанию. Лучшие песни включают “You’re My Heart, You’re My Soul”, “Brother Louie”, “Cheri, Cheri Lady” и “Geronimo’s Cadillac”. Их музыка оставила неизгладимый след в истории поп-музыки, захватывая слушателей своими заразительными мелодиями и запоминающимися текстами.
